How to Apply Mylar Dip Powder
Applying dip powder with mylar in it can sometimes be a little tricky. We've put together this step by step tutorial on how to use mylar dip powder (mylar pieces are in our Shattered collection). Video tutorial is coming soon!
How To Apply Mylar Dip Powder
- After prepping your nail as usual for a dip powder application, apply the base coat to your nail. Very important! Make sure you stir your powder before the next step.
- Pour the dip powder over your nail into a cupcake liner. This will ensure you get most of the dip powder base, and less mylar pieces on your first layer. Dust off the excess powder once your nail is dry.
- Shake your cupcake liner to even out the powder. Try to get as many mylar pieces close to the top of the powder as you can. This is a very simple, but crucial step.
- Apply a second layer of base coat. Place your finger right on top of the powder. Roll your finger from side to side to make sure you get even coverage.
- DO NOT DUST OFF YOUR NAIL YET! After you place your finger into the powder, take a plastic baggy (or any plastic wrap or glove) and place it over the entire nail and press down, making sure that the powder and mylar pieces stick smoothly to the nail.
- Once your nail is dry, now you can dust off the excess powder.
- Activate the nail so the powder can harden.
- Use builder gel to encapsulate. Do not worry if your nail seems thick or lumpy - you will fix it in the next step. (You can use clear powder, but you will need multiple layers to cover the nail. We strongly recommend you use builder gel.)
- Using an e-file, smooth out the nail. Do not worry if some of the mylar pieces file off - this contributes to the broken glass look. Make your nail as even and as smooth as you can with the e-file.
- Using a hand file, shape the nail to your desired look, and file over the top of the nail to smooth out any ridges the e-file may have left. Buff nail with a buffing block. Dust off any file dust.
- Use a gel top coat to finish off. The top coat will give you the shiny broken glass look.
Hopefully this helps with the application of any mylar dip powder you use.
Happy Dipping!
